Welcome to MLTech: Maritime Law Meets Technology—With Practical Answers

Shipping is changing fast. Bridge digitalisation, AI decision-support, cybersecurity, emissions rules and ever denser data flows are reshaping how we plan, navigate and prove compliance. MLTech is where I connect maritime law to that reality, not in theory, but in plain language that helps you make decisions on the bridge and in the office.

Here you will find short notes on new instruments and guidance from UNCLOS and the IMO, updates with legal significance from flag and port states, and case-driven commentary where facts allow. I focus on the “so what”: what a new rule means for a passage plan, what an incident report must contain to stand up to scrutiny, how a clause should read to allocate risk fairly, and how a digital tool fits within COLREGs, the ISM Code and good seamanship.

My view is simple: technology does not replace duties, it helps crews meet them more reliably. Decision-support systems that improve situational awareness, preserve contemporaneous records and make ship-to-shore collaboration transparent can reduce near-misses and narrow evidential uncertainty when an event is examined after the fact. The same goes for decarbonisation and ESG: documentation, data integrity and clear roles are now business-critical, not nice-to-have.

MLTech is written for practitioners—owners, managers, P&I clubs, brokers, technology providers and students who want a practical lens. Expect concise explainers, checklists distilled from real requirements and sample wording you can adapt. When appropriate, I also host briefings and workshops for teams that need to operationalise legal change across procedures, training and contracts.

If you want to stay current, follow MLTech on LinkedIn and subscribe to the newsletter. If your organisation needs help with a specific topic—clauses, incident readiness, cybersecurity policy, or internal training, get in touch. My goal is to translate legal risk into clear action so your people can navigate safely, efficiently and with confidence.
